Celebrate National Ice Cream Month With Paciugo Gelato

Paciugo Gelato Hermosa Beach as seen on Yelp eNewsletter.....Yelp's Ice Cold Chillin', read on to see what the YELP is all about...

It's official: Summer has arrived and brought with it National Ice Cream Month! That's right, 31 government-approved days and nights to eat the cold creamy goods with reckless abandon. Straight from the carton or out of a cup, it's time to rock out with your cone out. And whether it's fro-yo, gelato, or the classic stuff, yelpers have the scoop on just how to celebrate this momentous time of year.

Even grown-up kids like Craig Rlove an ice cream sandwich and when you find a spot like Diddy Riese, praise can only be sung: "Diddy, Diddy, Diddy can't you see? Sometimes your ice creams hypnotize me; And I just love your fresh baked cookies, I guess that's why your line stays so long all day." Well, that, and at $1.50 each, the old fashioned prices.

Down in Hermosa, Paciugo Gelato understands variety is the spice, leaving Lori K relieved: "I didn't need to pick one flavor, since I could get up to three in a size small. And for less than 200 calories, no need to feel guilty about having this treat!"

If quality and quantity are what you seek, Cheri Gadores the mega "two scoop" at Al Gelato in Beverly Hills. "Seriously, it's like The Hulk reached in and slammed two heaping portions onto that tiny metal cup." Adventurous palate like Courtenay T? Sample Rose Market's "distinct and delicious cantaloupe, cucumber, rose, saffron and blueberry." In Culver, Mateo's scoops up the exotic to locals like Colleen L, who chill with flavors like "smoked milk that tasted a little like a rich, toasted nut ice cream." But be warned: "the sugar rush went immediately to my head." The cure? More ice cream, stat!

Screamin' for more? The Valley has no shortage of icy tricks up its sleeve. Out in Woodland Hills, Stephanie Sis giddy with Yogurt Delite, where everything is not just delicious, but "all of their flavors are fat free, and they usually have one that's sugar free as well!" And at Northridge's Rosegreen, they "always have the freshest in-season fruit," according to Kelly T, plus, "where else in the Valley can you get yogurt and watch Korean dramas that you don't understand on a big TV screen?" Fresh fruit toppings and language tutorial? Doesn't get much cooler than that.

Enjoy the sweet indulgence of National Ice Cream Month. Paciugo Gelato Caffe is located at 1034 Hermosa Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA.

Paciugo Blackberry Cabernet Sorbetto Recipe As Seen on KTLA TV With Allie Mackay

Paciugo Blackberry Cabernet Sorbetto Recipe As Seen on KTLA TV With Allie Mackay. Enjoy this refreshing treat at home. The sourness of fresh, ripe blackberries, their little tang and the rich juice; support and heighten the flavor of Cabernet wine.

Ingredients:
Blackberries, fresh, 1 pint
Water, filtered, 1 ¼ cup
Sugar, granulated, ¾ cup
Cabernet wine, 3 TBSP (tablespoons)
Lemon juice, 2 tsp (teaspoons)

Procedure:
In a small pot, warm up the water, add the granulated sugar and stir until melted to sugar syrup.

Finely blend the fresh blackberries with the sugar syrup.

Note: We prefer not to strain the recipe, because when you do, you lose the fibers and nice texture that the little chunks of fruit give the sorbet.

Add lemon juice and Cabernet red wine and stir.

Put the liquid recipe inside the refrigerator for a few hours, until chilled.

Note: The faster the freezing process, the smaller the ice crystals, that means the same recipe is smoother if the freezing process is very fast. The professional equipment we use at the store freezes 2 qt of recipe in less than 5 minutes while the refrigerator may take much longer.

L.A. Examiner Blogs About Paciugo Gelato at Hermosa Beach Farmer's Market

The beach cities are always more humid after a rainy day and sitting in the house with the sun streaming is never very fun. On days like this is am glad to find there is a Farmers’ Market running everyday, you just have to find it. Luckily this is the internet age and in a few clicks we can load up in the car in search of fresh fruits, veggies and surprises. In the car we discuss where we are going and as I say Farmers’ Market my little darlings groan in chorus until they hear it is Hermosa Beach. “Hey, Gelato!” they cry, again in unison. Gelato, I don’t remember there being gelato at the market. No, I say with confidence there isn’t gelato there, just the usual seasonal treats and maybe we can get some lovely oranges for fresh sorbet. They insist though and I relent that we can look for the booth.
Walking up to the market it is easy to see this will be a quick visit, it is a smaller fair. The usual suspects all lined up, apples with homemade apple butter, fresh heirloom tomatoes, ugly yes but so yummy. There are piles and piles of Hass Avocados, which the vendor has kindly made in to a lovely guacamole for sampling. The sun glimmering off the sneeze guards, those acrylic shields over the lovely arrays of samples, bites of orange, plums, grapefruits with scads of toothpicks for picking. This is a fine way to kill an hour or two and it is refreshing to see my kids have relaxed and begun to enjoy themselves.
We turn the hook just passed the Kettle corn, bacon wrapped hotdogs and there it is Paciugo, a gelato stand. I am awe struck, what a brilliant idea! Gelato is healthier, lower in fat and as I confirm with the owner, made fresh daily from whole milk. I realize I will not be making sorbet tonight. The selection was small, only four trays, compared to the huge selection in their store, but what tastes. I truly loved the Sea Salt Caramel, it was luscious and I couldn’t wait to get it home and experiment with some desserts. I think it will make a lovely frozen Tiramisu type dessert; I will have to let you know how it turns out.
Paciugo is at Manhattan Beach Market Tuesday and El Segundo on Thursday, of course you can find them at their store any day: 1034 Hermosa Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA.

Gelato and Ice Cream: What is the difference?

Gelato has significantly less butterfat than ice cream's typical 18 and 26 percent. However, less fat does not mean less taste. With the lower butterfat content, gelato is less solidly frozen than ice cream and melts in the mouth faster. Therefore, you will taste gelato's full flavor immediately.

Gelato has a much higher density than ice cream. Ice cream is mad by mixing butterfat/cream, milk and sugar, then adding air. Mass producer of ice cream add more air when producing ice cream because it doubles the quantity of the ice cream. But, it cuts their quality in half. No air is added to gelato. Therefore, gelato is a higher quality dessert with a richer, creamier taste and 70% less fat than traditional ice cream.

Gelato is served slightly warmer than ice cream. Both gelato and ice cream are served well below the freezing temperature, gelato is served 10 to 15 degrees warmer than ice cream. Because gelato is less solidly frozen, gelato's taste is further enhanced as it melts in your mouth.

Why not let your palate experience the difference, preparing your own gelato from home could very well be a fun messy concoction. Try easy recipes such as Chocolate and Baileys.

Paciugo Gelato Voted as Best Ice Cream in South Bay

Paciugo Gelato Caffe in Hermosa Beach voted as Best Ice Cream in the 2009 Best of the Beach Easy Reader News Survey. Here's what they said:

It’s easy to fixate on the arcane flavors served at Paciugo gelato (www.paciugo.com) – like rose petal ice cream with chocolate chips, caramel and salt ice cream, or tiramisu ice cream that really does taste like tiramisu. The normal flavors (and they do have cherry, vanilla, and strawberry) are fantastic, too – made fresh daily without preservatives, and bursting with flavor. The ice cream is rich, soft, and naturally low in fat, and if you are really health-conscious or just prefer sorbet, they have a huge variety of flavors in that category, too. Mind you, despite the fact that they have over 200 flavors in their repertoire, not all are available every day – you may have to return several times to find the strawberry basil sorbet, but we’re betting you won’t mind.

Primo Italian Ice Cream = Good Life

Paciugo Gelato is a decadent Italian ice cream habit you can't feel guilty about, it's 70% less fat than those kind you find in your grocery store. I have been a Paciugo Gelato addict since this caffe opened. They have the most extensive gelato flavor selection. Everytime I go there, which is almost everyday, I discover new flavors. It's like a scavenger hunt for new flavors I have not experienced yet. It's a good thing that Paciugo serves their gelato in a cup that can hold more than three flavors. I love it, I can have all my favorite flavors, that would be Mediterranean Sea Salt Caramel, Pistachio, and Brittny's Caramel Apple. BTW, the caramel apple was named after one of the owners, Brittny. I was told she invented this flavor. Wow, the owner is also a foodie.
The best thing about Paciugo Gelato, it is made with milk, not butterfat or cream, this means Paciugo Gelato is 70% less fat than regular ice cream. OK, I'm not the only one who feels this much love for Paciugo, see their Yelp reviews at http://www.yelp.com/biz/paciugo-gelato-caffe-hermosa-beach
